OECON uses RFID technology for parking space occupancy determination

oecon-rfid-parkhausAs part of the #WolfsburgDigital initiative, OECON Products & Services developed a parking sensor on behalf of Wolfsburg AG a parking sensor to determine the occupancy level in a parking garage. The test environment is the parking garage on the premises of the Forum AutoVision of Wolfsburg AG.

On March 07, 2018, representatives of the city of Wolfsburg, Volkswagen AG as well as suppliers and logistics companies were able to learn about the so-called “UMA* Parking” solution in a live test.

OECON is using a technology that has already been tried and tested in logistics. The way the RFID sensors work is simple. If a car parks over the sensor, which is mounted on the floor of a parking space, the central receiver unit records an attenuated signal and can evaluate that this parking space is occupied. “The forward-looking solution fits the expectations of users who want barrier-free parking as quickly as possible. Moreover, it is a necessary step towards autonomous driving” says Frank Brennecke from OECON Products & Services GmbH.

In the next step, the “UMA Parking” test application is to be integrated as a function in the “UMA Navigation” application, which already shows the user the parking space occupancy in selected large parking lots in Wolfsburg. The “UMA Parking” function could also be used in the future, especially in freight logistics, to record free truck or container parking spaces.

* UMA stands for the Urban Mobility Assistance app family.
